Paryaya Festival: Passing the Divine Baton: 

One of the most unique aspects of the Udupi Krishna Temple is the biennial Paryaya festival. Discover the intricacies of this ritual where the responsibility of temple administration is ceremoniously passed between the eight mathas (religious institutions). This event brings together devotees, scholars, and tourists in a grand celebration of faith and tradition. Celebrations and rituals of Paryaya Utsava start from early morning. The Swamiji of next Matha to take over temple management takes holy dip and is taken to Sri Krishna temple in a palanquin. A procession and cultural shows accompany this commute to the temple. At the Udupi Sri Krishna Temple, current Swamiji who needs to hand over the management performs multiple rituals and hands over key control elements like keys to the shrine, Akshaya Patra and other pooja elements. A public function and durbar is held later in the day for the benefit of devotees attending the festival. No visit to the Udupi Krishna Temple is complete without savoring the divine prasadam.

Founded by the revered saint Madhvacharya in the 13th century, the Udupi Krishna Math has been a spiritual beacon for centuries. This monastic establishment, also known as the Udupi Ashta Mathas, is an amalgamation of eight distinct mathas, each responsible for the temple’s administration during the biennial Paryaya festival. The mathas not only serve as religious centers but also as custodians of the profound Dvaita philosophy, emphasizing the dualism between the individual soul and the Supreme.The daily sevas (offerings to god) and administration of the Krishna Mathas is managed by the Ashta Mathas (eight monasteries). Each of the Ashta Mathas performs temple management activities for two years in a cyclical order. They are collectively known as the ‘Ashta Mathagalu’ in Kannada. Each Ashta Matha has its own deity which is called Pattada Devaru. Udupi Krishna Temple is known for its religious customs, traditions and tenets of Dvaita or Tatvavada philosophy. It is also the center of Daasa Saahitya, a form of literature that originated in Udupi. These eight Mathas are: Pejavara, Puttige, Palimaru Matha, Admaru Matha, Sodhe Matha, Kaniyoor Matha, Shirur Matha Krishnapura Matha The expenses of Udupi Krishna Matha are borne by the voluntary contributions of the devotees and by the Ashta Mathas that manage the Krishna Matha.
