This town is well-known for the Manipal University and is also the location of other universities that Dr. T. M. A. Pai founded. It is situated along the Malabar coast, just 8 kilometres from the Arabian Sea. In addition to the Manipal University campus, this location is home to the Syndicate Bank’s global headquarters and a regional IT cluster.
Before 1950, Manipal was a peaceful coastal town with little notoriety. It originally belonged to the panchayat of the Shivalli village. All of that changed, though, when Dr. Tonse Madhava Anantha Pai decided to establish a medical education facility in the town. The first private medical institution in India, Kasturba Medical College, opened in the peaceful hamlet of Manipal in 1953. Within a few years, it rose to prominence as one of Karnataka’s most well-known locations.
